Members of the Community-based Disaster Preparedness Committee (CDPC) from Barangay Nagkaisang Nayon in Quezon City conducted their own Hazard Mapping session last April 29, 2012 as part of the Community-based Disaster Management Training aimed at vulnerable communities in Quezon City.

The Institute for Occupational Health and Safety Development ( initiated the project “Capacity Building for Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Response in Selected Workers and Urban Poor Communities in Quezon City” (CDPER) in order to help in developing disaster preparedness in various communities. According to Emma Celada, CDPER Project Lead, the necessity of communities preparing for disaster is unquestionable. “Disasters, like that of Ondoy, will come again and preparedness will mitigate the impact to our lives and property.”

The Hazard Mapping exercise aims to come up with a visual representation of the dangers communities face by tapping the knowledge of locals and other people on the ground. Each hazard map details out one hazard and the vulnerable sections of the locale. The map will be shared with the other members of the communities and regularly updated to remain relevant and accurate.

The CDPER is a project of IOHSAD in cooperation with Mayor Herbert Bautista of Quezon City and supported by the Priority Development Assistance Fund of Gabriela Womens Party Representative Luzviminda Ilagan.
