The Institute for Occupational Health and Safety Development (IOHSAD) conducted a forum last September 18, 2009 entitled “Compensation claim: Paano nga ba?” with the main speaker coming from the Employees Compensation Commission (ECC) and participants from various unions and workers organizations. The forum was held at the Asian Social Institute in Leon Guinto Street, Malate, Manila.

“The main objective of the forum was to update the participants on the process of employees compensation,” said Noel Colina, Executive Director of IOHSAD. “Ms. Carmencita Lacambra was able to give us necessary information on how we can assist workers who are seeking compensation claims. Ms. Lacambra is currently PRO-IV of the ECC.

According to Colina, many workers are unaware of the existence of the ECC, moreso the process of filing claims. “A lot of clarification were made today, especially the notion that only workers belonging to companies contributing to the ECC can seek claims. The ECC clarified that starting day one of membership to the Social Security System (SSS) or the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), workers are already eligible for claims”

“This forum regarding compensation is just a part of our thrust to increase the capacity of unions and workers organizations to assist their members. Since workers are more aware, it will also amplify our own efforts to assist occupational accident and disease victims,” ended Colina.
