Residents of Barangay 105, Vitas, Tondo, Manila gathered last Friday, September 14, 2012 to welcome the opening of the Hapilan Child Care Clinic (H3C). The H3C provides free medical consultation and surveillance to the children of Hapilan, Tondo, Manila.

“We are very happy to extend the services of the Hapilan Daycare Center and include the provision of basic medical services and surveillance to the children and their families. Education and health are two of the most essential needs of children, “ said Rowena Agaton, program officer of the H3C.

The program started with a Holy Mass officiated by Fr. Joey of San Pablo Apostol Parish in Tondo. It was followed by the traditional ribbon cutting, attended by Dr. Mary Grace Aquino, physician of the Vitas Barangay Health Center, Dr. Merry Mia, resident doctor of Hapilan Child Care Clinic. Nitz Gonzaga, board member of IOHSAD, barangay health workers and staff members of IOHSAD.

After the short program, Dr. Mia started to check the health conditions of the clinic’s first batch of patients. Coughs, colds and upper respiratory tract infection were the most common ailments of the children. Living near the garbage dump and poor nutrition affect the overall health conditions of the children in the community.

The Hapilan Child Care Clinic is a project of the Institute for Occupational Health and Safety Development (IOHSAD) with support from the Australian People for Health, Education and Development Abroad (APHEDA).
